Stuffed Jalepenos from M&M Meat Shops

If you don't like breaded and deep fried food, you probably should skip this, because it's all about what you don't like.

M&M Meat Shops sells a bag of about 20-25 jalepeno peppers with their innards removed, cheese inside them, and a breaded coating and a light deep frying for $10. At maybe $0.50 each, these little guys aren't cheap, but are they ever tasty. They're ready in ~15 minutes, you only need to preheat the oven to 450 and then let them spend 6 minutes per side cooking with a turnover in the middle.

I'm sure there are those of you out there who aren't into spicy food - and the mere word jalepeno is enough to make you cringe in fear. Believe it or not, these little darlings aren't spicy. You can taste the jalepeno flavor in them, but you don't get any lingering burn from them at all. They are a little on the "heavy" side with the cheese and the slightly-oily breaded coating, but they're supposed to be an appetizer after all.

When you first pull them out of the oven, give them a few minutes to cool down before you bite into them - the cheese tends to launch itself out the side, burning your hand / cheek / lips / mouth.  Cheese can also stick to your skin like napalm when it's hot and melted - you've been warned!

These tasty delights are also very addictive. Be warned.

Captain Eli's - from the parking lot
Captain Eli's - from the parking lot
Last night a friend and I decided to have dinner with the Captain - Captain Eli's, that is.

Captain Eli's is famous for great fish and chips, lots of karaoke, and a stabbing way back when. Thankfully the karaoke and stabbings don't go hand in hand, and around supper time you're safe from both. :-)

Located in the strip mall on Young Street in north end Halifax, just up from the Eastlink Building and across from the Superstore, it's out of the way of downtown and other people attractors such as the business park(s) and some of the big-box chain stores. However, there does seem to be a loose-knit group of restaurants/bars in the area (Pizza Hut, Steak and Stein, The Lion's Head, Tarek's, Subway, etc).

It's hard to write about Ray's Lebanese food - do you start by talking about the amazing food? Or by talking about Ray, who has to be one of the friendlest people you'd ever meet? He also has an amazing memory and will remember your regular order if you've been there more than once or twice.
